Video lighting – Lighting is critical to producing high-quality videos. Video lighting is based on the same principles as lighting for any other visual media. The lighting techniques in your video will make a big impact on the quality of your final image. You can use the light to direct the eye of the viewer where you want it to go, control the mood of your video, add texture and color, emphasize and de-emphasize elements within the frame, make people look beautiful, ugly, sinister, or angelic…
Video lighting is very similar to photography lighting. In fact, if you get training on photography, that will go a long way toward helping you become skilled with video. Video is similar to photography. When we shoot video, we’re writing with light at 30 frames per second, with sound. Light is the single most important element that affects the final video image.

All video uses some sort of lighting, whether it be natural light (from the sun) or artificial lights. The goal of video lighting is to choose the best source(s) to achieve your goals. First and foremost you need enough light. You must ensure that your camera is able to record an acceptable picture in the conditions. With modern cameras this is seldom a problem except in very low light or strong contrast. Assuming you have enough light, you must then consider the quality of the light and how the various light sources combine to produce the image. If you have clashing light sources (e.g. artificial interior lights with sunlight coming through the windows), you may find the colors in your image appear unnatural. It’s best to control the light sources yourself if possible.

Nowadays LED lights are most frequently used for Video work. There are many benefits of LED lighting:

  • Very low generated heat: They run relatively cool to touch, so you can squeeze a light into places that a conventional hot light can’t go
  • Comfort factor: The room or studio stays cool
  • Short return on investment due to low electrical draw and savings on studio AC and lamps.
  • Efficiency: LEDs convert 80% of their energy into light, as opposed to 20% in a standard tungsten fixture.
  • Low heat means little or no cool-down period, so you’re on the go faster.
  • Long average service life
  • Available in Daylight (5500K) or Tungsten (3200K) balance or bi-color with user adjustable color balance.
  • LEDs generally have a high CRI (Color Rendering Index). Most Yongnuo LED lights have a very high CRI of more than 90-95%
  • Most are dimmable and remote controllable manually or via DMX
